It was lunchtime on a recent weekday, and the Michigan Avenue Nordstrom store was grimly recession-quiet -- except for one spot: the Ugg section of the shoe department. There, it was frenzied. Women filled every seat, pulling on and off the warm, iconic sheepskin boots; stacks of giant Ugg boxes were scattered about. Having grown sick of frozen toes, I bought a pair too. I love them. My now-warm toes love them too. How did Decker Outdoor Corp., the...

They're so ugly, they're cute. They're so comfortable, they're irresistible. They're so popular, unless you wear a size 6 or a 10 shoe, you can hardly find a pair. We're talking about Uggs, the sheepskin boots originally worn by Australian surfers and now swaddling the pampered peds of Kate Hudson, Sarah Jessica Parker and a host of other hot actresses. Forget, for a moment, that stylish women from coast to coast are wearing knee-high stiletto-heeled boots this fall. The...

ALBUM Heavy Crown Lovehammers Find it at amazon.com, iTunes and Best Buys in Illinois The latest album from Chicago's Lovehammers brings the patriotism with the single "Guns," an homage to U.S. troops. Though the song is a bit heavy-handed -- Marty Casey sings "Let's pray for all those sweet lives/That fight for our lives till the end" -- you can't argue with the spirit. The band has organized shoe box campaigns -- filling shoe boxes with supplies and CDs -- for troops serving overseas...

Jessica Alba isn't dreaming of Jeannie after all. The sexy "Fantastic Four" starlet was rumored to be starring in the big-screen adaptation of "I Dream of Jeannie," but she told the New York Daily News she will instead focus on an indie drama called "The Wake." "So I'm going to do a little artsy movie next," she said. Good thing, given how the Nicole Kidman-starring "Bewitched" fizzled. Meanwhile, Alba has proclaimed the next generation of Ugg boots the "must-have essential item" for fall--not that she feels...

There is nothing we love more this time of year than a great sweater. Fair Isle patterns seem to have momentarily edged out stripes as the festive pre-holiday knitwear of choice, which makes sense given the current popularity of UGG Australia boots and other elements of apres-ski style. Fair Isle sweaters can be picked up for a reasonable price at Gap stores or you can splurge on luxe versions at Ralph Lauren. Both companies also can provide insight into keeping the look "cool girl 2003"...
